ACTION ADVENTURE GENRE

Remember the questions you'll get:
  • Explain two ways in which the events in the trailer fit the action adventure genre (10 marks)
  • Explain how each of the following is used to create effects: the soundtrack, camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene (20 marks)
  • Discuss the ways in which people are represented. Make reference to stereotypes (20 marks)

Activity 1 Action Adventure films often ‘cross over’ other film genres, making Action Adventure a hybrid genre. You need to know this for Q.1 in order to draw attention to AA conventions. Fill in your quiz sheet matching genre to 14 titles.
Activity 2  Watch screening of Austin Powers in Goldmember the Austin Powers spoof on YouTube here.
On your handout entitled ‘Genre narrative conventions on character and events’, circle genre conventions and give an example of three of them.

Activity 3 Watch screening of Gladiator and answer questions on ‘What do the camerawork and mise-en-scène tell us about the construction of ‘heroes’ in Gladiator ?


Activity 4 Watch screening of the echo game and Arundhathi drum dance from House of Flying Daggers here on YouTube. and consider aspects of performance, spectacle, wire work and CGI.

THE INBETWEENERS

For your summer exam, we can pair QI with The Inbetweeners as case studies of television comedy. For prep, write a brief character study of the four main characters, using examples from the episodes on The Isle Of Wight Field Trip and The Camping Trip.
