B324 EXAM: INBETWEENERS & QI

Key Concepts: Exam B324 Section B
AUDIENCE
You should be prepared to analyse & discuss :
•      Mass and niche audiences
•      How The Inbetweeners and QI address their audiences
•      Pleasures The Inbetweeners and QI offer audiences.
You must identify whether The Inbetweeners and QI are aimed at the mass audiences or at niche audiences.
You must analyse how The Inbetweeners and QI address their audiences, e.g.:
•      The points of recognition or identification offered
 •     Addressing audiences’ lifestyles, concerns & aspirations
 •     Addressing audiences as passive consumers or active contributors
 •     Whether the audience is placed in position of power (eg positioned as omniscient).
You should be able to discuss the pleasures of the texts for different audiences.
You should give textual examples from a minimum of two texts within the TV comedy genre.
You can also refer to The IT Crowd as you know it so well.

INSTITUTION
You should be prepared to analyse and discuss:
Institutional contexts:
•     The media channels’ brand identities
 •    The media channels’ ethos and histories (only relevant if they affect programmes)
 •     Regulatory (eg Public Service Broadcasting) requirements
 •                  The media channels’ target audiences.
Institutional contexts need only be discussed insofar as they illuminate our chosen texts; they should not be studied independently of The Inbetweeners and QI.
Contexts of transmission:
•                  Targeting audiences
•                  Placement between texts
•                  Scheduling (eg stripping schedules)
•                  Competition between institutions
•                  Repeating texts on related channels
•                  Releasing in different formats
•                  Offering texts on demand.
Don't produce generalized essays about scheduling. Instead, explain how and why the institutions have transmitted The Inbetweeners and QI in specific time slots.
